About the project

CIP (Cleaning in Place) is an important process in the food industry, especially in the dairy industry, used to wash equipment. Here, stay with Food Science to learn more about the concept of CIP and its role in the food industry.

What is CIP?
CIP stands for “Cleaning in Place”, which means “washing in place”.
In this process, industrial equipment and machinery are washed and germs destroyed automatically and on the spot using hot water, water steam, and detergents12.
Principles of CIP operation:
Equipment is washed in situ without the need to open it, using circulating water and cleaning solutions.
Detergents include alkaline and acidic substances. for example:
Soda (sodium hydroxide): for cleaning grease stains and bactericidal 1.
Nitric acid and phosphoric acid: for washing systems with hot surfaces 1.
The importance of CIP in the dairy industry:
Before performing CIP, it is necessary to recover the remaining milk in the production lines. This work reduces waste and reduces the problems of wastewater disposal1.
CIP systems:
Centralized systems: used in small dairy units with short lines. Water and detergents are sent from storage tanks to different CIP paths.
Decentralized systems: In this system, washing is done directly on site1.
In short, CIP cleans and disinfects industrial equipment and is very important in the food industry.
